If no one is watching the video, the server originally hosting the video handles the delivery (using the WebSeed protocol). In addition to distributing traffic among users watching videos, PeerTube also allows nodes run by authors for primary video hosting to cache the videos of other authors, forming a distributed network made up not only of clients but also of servers, ensuring fault tolerance. Live streaming is supported with P2P content delivery (standard programs like OBS can be used to manage the streaming).

To start broadcasting via PeerTube, a user only needs to upload a video, a description, and a set of tags to one of the servers. After that, the video will be available across the entire federated network, not just from the primary upload server. To work with PeerTube and participate in content distribution, a standard browser is sufficient, with no additional software installation required. Users can track activities in selected video channels by subscribing to channels of interest in federated social networks (such as Mastodon and Pleroma) or through RSS. To distribute videos using P2P communications, the user can also add a special widget with an embedded web player to their website.

Currently, there are over 900 servers operating to host content, supported by various volunteers and organizations. If a user is not satisfied with the video hosting rules of a particular serveru PeerTube server, they can connect to another server or launch their own server. A pre-configured Docker image (chocobozzz/peertube) is provided for quick server deployment.
