Upravlja\u010dki demon i alati Shepherd napisani su na jeziku Guile (jedna od implementacija jezika Scheme), koji se tako\u0111e koristi za definisanje postavki i parametara pokretanja servisa. Shepherd se ve\u0107 koristi u distribuciji GuixSD GNU\/Linux i namenjen je tako\u0111e za kori\u0161\u0107enje u GNU\/Hurd, ali mo\u017ee raditi na bilo kojem POSIX-kompatibilnom OS-u za koji je dostupan jezik Guile.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd se mo\u017ee koristiti kao osnovni sistem inicijalizacije (init c PID 1), ali i kao odvojeni entitet za upravljanje pozadinskim procesima pojedina\u010dnih korisnika (npr. za pokretanje tor, privoxy, mcron itd.) s izvr\u0161enjem uz privilegije tih korisnika. Shepherd obavlja zadatke pokretanja i zaustavljanja usluga, uzimaju\u0107i u obzir me\u0111uzavisnosti izme\u0111u usluga, dinami\u010dki odre\u0111uju\u0107i i pokre\u0107u\u0107i usluge od kojih zavisi odabrana usluga.
