Rezultat se mo\u017ee \u010duvati kao otvoreni tekst, kao i u HTML formatima (hOCR), ALTO (XML), PDF i TSV. Sustav je prvotno razvijen u razdoblju od 1985. do 1995. godine u laboratoriju tvrtke Hewlett Packard, a 2005. godine kod je otvoren pod Apache licencom i od tada se razvijao uz sudjelovanje zaposlenika tvrtke Google. Izvorni tekstovi projekta <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/tesseract-ocr\/tesseract\">distribuiraju se<\/a><\/noindex> pod licencom Apache 2.0.<\/p>\n<p> Tesseract uklju\u010duje konzolnu alatku i biblioteku libtesseract za integraciju funkcionalnosti prepoznavanja teksta u druge aplikacije. Me\u0111u podr\u017eanim Tesseract vanjskim <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/tesseract-ocr\/tesseract\/wiki\/User-Projects-%E2%80%93-3rdParty\">GUI su\u010deljima<\/a><\/noindex> about:support <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/manisandro\/gImageReader\">gImageReader<\/a><\/noindex>, <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/vietocr.sourceforge.net\/\">VietOCR<\/a><\/noindex> i <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/yagf-ocr\/\">YAGF<\/a><\/noindex>. Pru\u017eaju se dva motora za prepoznavanje: klasi\u010dni, koji prepoznaje tekst na temelju \u0161ablona pojedinih znakova, i novi, koji se temelji na sustavu strojog u\u010denja koriste\u0107i rekurrentnu neuronsku mre\u017eu LSTM, optimiziranu za prepoznavanje cijelih redaka i koja omogu\u0107uje zna\u010dajno pove\u0107anje to\u010dnosti. Gotovi modeli obu\u010deni su za <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/tesseract-ocr\/tesseract\/wiki\/Data-Files\">123 jezika<\/a><\/noindex>.
