A new implementation of a file server using the SMB3 protocol has been proposed for inclusion in the next release of the Linux kernel. The server is designed as a ksmbd kernel module and complements the previously available SMB client code. It is noted that, unlike the user-space SMB server, the kernel-level implementation is more efficient in terms of performance, memory consumption, and integration with the kernel's advanced features.
Among the capabilities of ksmbd is improved support for distributed file caching technology (SMB leases) on local systems, which significantly reduces traffic. In the future, new features are planned to be added, such as RDMA support ('smbdirect') and protocol extensions related to enhancing encryption reliability and digital signature verification. It is noted that such extensions are much easier to implement in a compact and well-optimized szerveren, kernel-level environment than in the Samba package.
At the same time, ksmbd does not aim to fully replace the Samba package, which is not limited to file capabilities a szerver and provides tools covering security services, LDAP, and domain controller functionalities. The file server implementation in Samba is cross-platform and intended for a wider range of applications, making optimization for certain Linux environments, such as firmware for resource-constrained devices, challenging.
Ksmbd is viewed not as a standalone product but rather as a high-performance module ready for use in embedded devices, integrable with Samba tools and libraries if necessary. For example, an agreement has already been reached with Samba developers regarding the use of ksmbd-compatible configuration files and extended attributes (xattrs), which will facilitate transitioning from smbd to ksmbd and vice versa.
A ksmbd kód fő szerzői a Samsungtól Namjae Jeon és az LG-től Hyunchul Lee. A ksmbd karbantartásáért a Microsoft-tól Steve French felel, aki korábban sok éven át az IBM-nél dolgozott, és a Linux kernel CIFS/SMB2/SMB3 alrendszerének fenntartója, valamint a Samba fejlesztőcsapatának régi tagja, aki jelentős hozzájárulást tett az SMB/CIFS protokollok támogatásának megvalósításához a Sambában és a Linuxban.
