Ethan Smith, a key developer of MyPyC, a compiler that converts Python modules into C code, reported the addition of changes to the CPython codebase (the reference implementation of Python) that allow building the main branch of CPython to work within a browser without needing additional patches. The build is achieved into a universal low-level intermediate code known as WebAssembly using the Emscripten compiler.

The work was approved by Guido van Rossum, the creator of the Python programming language, who additionally suggested integrating Python support into the web service github.dev, which offers an interactive development environment fully operational in the browser. Jonathan Carter from Microsoft mentioned that work is currently underway to implement Python support in github.dev, but the existing prototype of the Jupyter computing environment for github.dev used the Pyodide project (a build of the Python 3.9 runtime in WebAssembly).
The discussion also raised the topic of building Python with WASI (WebAssembly System Interface) support to use the WebAssembly representation of Python without the binding to a web browser. It is noted that realizing such an opportunity would require significant effort, as WASI does not provide an implementation of the pthread API, and the ability to build Python without enabling multithreading has been discontinued.
