A xfwm4 window manager variant, adapted for use with the Wayland protocol and translated to the Meson build system, is being developed by an independent enthusiast within the xfwm4-wayland project. Wayland support in xfwm4-wayland is ensured through integration with the wlroots library, developed by the creators of the Sway desktop environment and providing the basic functions needed for organizing the operation of a compositor based on Wayland. Xfwm4 is used in the Xfce desktop environment for displaying, decorating, and transforming windows.
The developer has not yet decided whether to continue developing the port independently or as part of Xfce. If the project remains independent, it will be given the name xfway, which was previously used by the same author for experiments in developing a compositor for Xfce, running on top of the libweston library. a szerver The work on the xfwm4 port based on wlroots is not yet complete, and compared to the previous attempt at creating a compositor based on libweston, the new port currently lags behind in functionality. However, the port is actively being developed—just a few days ago, support for window switching with Alt+Tab was added. Future plans mention ensuring compatibility with both Wayland and X11.
As for the official support for Wayland in Xfce, it is still stalled. According to a plan published a year ago, acceptable operation of core applications in environments based on Wayland is intended to be achieved in the release of Xfce 4.18, while a full transition to Wayland is considered a long-term goal. Among the options for adapting Xfce for Wayland, the use of libmutter or wlroots was discussed, but ultimately the choice was made in favor of libmutter, as it is more familiar for developers working with GTK. Unlike the wlroots-based port, a solution based on libmutter will require integration of components from xfce4-panel and xfdesktop into the compositor server.
