December 9th, the developers of the Lubuntu distribution shared some plans for the upcoming release of Lubuntu 24.04 LTS. As part of this version of the distribution, scheduled for release in April, an additional Wayland session is planned. The session will not be installed by default, however, starting from version 24.10, Wayland will be used as the standard option.
The Lubuntu developers also hope to completely switch the distribution to Qt6. Upstream LXQt is also working on Wayland support and the transition from Qt5 to Qt6.
Major improvements and new features expected in the Lubuntu 24.04 LTS release include:
- new customizable options in the system installer:
- minimal installation "barebone" systems without snapd;
- standard installation with the default set of applications;
- full installation — the same as the standard installation, but with pre-installed additional applications Element, Thunderbird, Krita, and Virtual Machine Manager.
- the ability to allow or disallow system updates during the deployment;
- the "Try or Install" feature, absent since April 18, is available again;
- when using a Wi-Fi connection, if no user is present, after some time it will prompt to re-enter the password — and if an incorrect password is entered that is shorter or longer than the correct one, the Wi-Fi connection will be dropped until the next correct password entry attempt;
- the developers emphasize that Ubuntu Desktop currently does not have such functionality!
- Bluetooth management — a graphical Bluetooth management interface is available in the LXQt menu, and now you can easily configure your devices (this utility is based on GTK, but by version Lubuntu 26.04 it will be rewritten in Qt);
- SDDM editor — a simple yet fully functional login screen editor is now available from the LXQt menu;
- Redshift — a feature to dim the screen at night, with the option to activate the blue light filter (a graphical way to configure it is not yet available, but there is a context menu in the panel for temporarily pausing it);
- updating some standard LXQt themes, including the announcement of the theme Windows Eleven (link to kép, valamint link to GitLab the theme author);
- a Power Management UX fejlesztésének folytatása - a felhasználói élmény egyszerűsítése és javítása a figyelmeztetések vonatkozásában (a végső cél az, hogy csak az igazán hasznos információkat nyújtsuk, például ha virtuális gép működik, akkor ne kelljen figyelmeztetni az akkumulátor hiányára);
- frissített akkumulátor ikon - az alapértelmezett ikon helyett, amely nem ad pontos információt az akkumulátor töltöttségéről (alacsony/közepes/magas), most pontosan 100%-ban megjelenik az energia töltöttsége;
- Lubuntu Manual Icon - az ikon frissítése =);
- új ikon megjelenése a Calamares asztalán.
