A GNOME project developer, Jonas Dressler, has published findings that allow the Aliendalvik (AppSupport) environment to run on standard Linux distributions. Aliendalvik serves as a layer for the Sailfish mobile platform that enables the execution of applications designed for Android. During the reverse engineering of Aliendalvik, patches for the Mutter composite server, scripts, and bindings for the sound server and input system necessary to launch Aliendalvik outside of the Sailfish platform were prepared.
The launch of Aliendalvik has been demonstrated on the Pinephone Pro and Oneplus 6 smartphones, which were set up with Arch Linux featuring the GNOME Mobile shell. It is noted that standard Freedesktop APIs are used for interaction between Aliendalvik and the Sailfish user environment; for example, notifications are transmitted via the DBus interface org.freedesktop.Notification, and the MPRIS protocol is employed for controlling music players. Each launched Android application is displayed using a separate Wayland surface in its window, and the Wayland "text-input" protocol is used for input.
The Aliendalvik environment is initiated using LXC container isolation tools, and the components for integration with the host system are built for the ARM64 architecture and developed using Qt. Unlike the similar Waydroid project, which also runs an Android environment in a container, Aliendalvik ensures tighter integration with the host system; for instance, Android applications open in regular windows, contacts synchronization is supported, and the Sailfish on-screen keyboard is utilized.
The Sailfish system environment is based on the Mer project (which has been developed as part of Sailfish since April 2019) and the packages of the Nemo Mer distribution. The environment employs systemd, DBus, RPM, PackageKit, PulseAudio, BlueZ, Wayland, and Qt. The compositor lipstick is built on QtCompositor. Firejail is used for application isolation. ConnMan manages network connections, while oFono serves as the telephony stack. szerver A GNOME project developer, Jonas Dressler, has published findings that allow the Aliendalvik (AppSupport) environment to run on standard distributions.
