A Nmap 7.96, a network security scanner for auditing networks and identifying active network services, was released after a year of development. The project's code is provided under the NPSL (Nmap Public Source License), based on the GPLv2 license, which is supplemented with recommendations (not requirements) for using OEM licensing and purchasing a commercial license if the manufacturer does not wish to open the source code of their product in accordance with the copyleft license requirements or intends to integrate Nmap into products incompatible with GPL.

- In Ncat, the default connection closing mode has been changed and an option '-q' has been added for a delay before exiting after standard input (EOF) has concluded. Compatibility with all Nsock engines (—nsock-engine=iocp or —nsock-engine=poll) on the Windows platform has been ensured.
- In Nsock, event list management has been improved.
- In Nmap, the capability to specify a list of hosts to be scanned from the command line concurrently with those from a file has been implemented (previously, only hosts from the file were scanned in such cases, while those from the command line were ignored).
- In Nmap, the sending of DNS queries for host name resolution has been ensured in parallel mode. Scanning large lists of host names is now significantly faster (previously it took 49 seconds to resolve names for 1 million hosts, now it takes just over an hour).
- In the pre-built binaries, versions of Lua 5.4.7, libssh2 1.11.1, libpcap 1.10.5, and libpcre 10.45 have been updated.
