A Rust Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and support of the Rust programming language and its ecosystem, has introduced the Rust Innovation Lab initiative, aimed at providing support for open projects written in Rust that are used to ensure the operation of critical infrastructure elements. This initiative will allow projects to receive financial, legal, and marketing assistance, as well as administrative support and help in project management organization.
The Rust Innovation Lab will provide Rust projects with the necessary resources to develop their ideas without being distracted by non-development tasks, while maintaining independence. Among other things, the initiative will allow for the organization of donations and interaction with sponsors on behalf of the nonprofit organization Rust Foundation to provide tax incentives. Thus, projects will not have to create their own legal entity, open a bank account, and manage tax reporting. The Rust Foundation will keep records and provide the necessary reports for sponsors and project participants.
The first project accepted into the Rust Innovation Lab is the Rustls cryptographic library, which offers client and server implementations of the TLS1.2 and TLS1.3 protocols for projects in Rust. Rustls does not provide its own implementation of cryptographic primitives, but uses pluggable cryptographic function providers (supporting ECDSA, Ed25519, RSA, ChaCha20-Poly1305, AES128-GCM, and AES256-GCM algorithms). By default, Rustls uses a cryptographic provider based on the aws-lc-rs library, which is developed by Amazon and is based on the C++ code of AWS-LC, which is a fork of the BoringSSL project (maintained by Google as a fork of OpenSSL). The ring library, which is partially based on BoringSSL and combines code in assembly, C++, and Rust, can also be used as a cryptographic provider.
