Galen Hunt, a managing director of Microsoft Azure Sphere and former head of the operating systems development group at Microsoft Research, presented a research project aimed at creating tools that combine AI with traditional algorithms to automate the rewriting of Microsoft’s largest codebases in Rust. The project aims to completely eliminate C and C++ from Microsoft’s codebases by 2030. The mission is stated as addressing technical debt in large-scale projects. It is noted that the developing infrastructure for code processing is focused on allowing one engineer to translate a million lines of code in a month. The project is being developed within Microsoft CoreAI.
