A postmarketOS project, which develops a Linux distribution for mobile devices, has announced a name change to Nura. The name is inspired by the ancient Nuraghe towers in Sardinia, symbolizing stability and longevity, aligning with the project's goal of extending the life of mobile devices. The logo largely remains unchanged but has been refined for better readability. The domain has changed from postmarketos.org to nura.eco.
The reason for the renaming is cited as the difficulty in promoting the project due to the lengthy and complex pronunciation of the old name, which some non-native English speakers found hard to remember. Additionally, there was confusion over the capitalization (postmarketOS, PostMarketOS, or PostmarketOS) and the inability to register a trademark due to the descriptive nature of the old name (the application for the Nura trademark has already been submitted by the project's developers). The new name was selected after several rounds of voting from more than 300 suggestions put forth by the community and was checked for negative connotations in various languages.
The project develops a Linux distribution for mobile devices and smartphones, based on the Alpine Linux package base, the standard C library Musl, and a set of BusyBox utilities. The goal is to provide a Linux distribution for smartphones and tablets that is independent of the lifecycle support of official firmware and not tied to the typical solutions of major industry players. The primary user interfaces offered are KDE Plasma Mobile, Phosh, GNOME Mobile, and Sxmo, with the possibility of installing other environments, including MATE, COSMIC, and Xfce. Builds are created for 65 devices (32 community and 33 testing), including the PINE64 PinePhone Pro, Purism Librem 5, OnePlus 6, Fairphone 5, Google Nexus 10, Google Pixel 3a, Nokia N900, Lenovo A60xx, ASUS MeMo Pad 7, as well as various Samsung Galaxy and Xiaomi models. Limited experimental support is provided for more than 600 devices.
