A hacker who stopped the WannaCry ransomware has pleaded guilty to creating the Kronos banking trojan.

Malware researcher Marcus Hutchins has pleaded guilty to two counts of creating and selling banking malware, bringing an end to a lengthy legal battle with U.S. prosecutors.

Hutchins, a British citizen and owner of a website and blog about malware and information security MalwareTech, was arrested in August 2017 when he was set to fly back to the UK after the Def Con security conference in Las Vegas. Prosecutors charged Hutchins with his involvement in the creation of the Kronos banking trojan. He was later released on a $30,000 bond. Interestingly, the amount was covered by a sympathetic hacker whom Marcus had never met in real life.

A plea agreement was submitted to the court in the Eastern District of Wisconsin, where Hutchins' indictment had previously taken place. His trial was scheduled to continue later this year. Marcus agreed to plead guilty to distributing the Kronos trojan, created in 2014, which was used to steal passwords and credentials from banking websites. He also agreed to plead guilty to a second charge of selling the trojan to another individual. The young hacker now faces up to 10 years in prison.

In a brief statement on his website, Hutchins wrote: "I regret these actions and take full responsibility for my mistakes."

"As I grew up, I have used the same skills I abused years ago for constructive purposes," Marcus recalls. "I will continue to devote time to protecting people from malware attacks in the future."

Marcus Hutchins' attorney, Marcia Hofmann, did not respond to requests for comment from TechCrunch, nor did Justice Department representative Nicole Navas.

Hutchins hírnevet szerzett, miután megállította a WannaCry zsarolóvírus terjedését 2017 májusában, alig néhány hónappal a jövőbeni letartóztatása előtt. Később a támadást észak-koreai hackereknek tulajdonították.
