A non-profit organization called „Russian Quality System” (Roskachestvo) has identified the best mobile applications that help preschool children learn to read.
The focus is on educational programs for Android and iOS operating systems. The quality of the apps was evaluated based on eleven criteria, most of which relate to safety.
In particular, experts examined the available parental control options, requests for any personal data and permissions, the safety of data transmission and storage, as well as the presence of any undesirable modules.
Additionally, attention was paid to the presence of advertising banners and the possibility of turning them off. It was also evaluated which of the studied applications have user manuals.
It is reported that a total of sixteen applications are included in the ranking — eight for Android devices and eight for iOS. Their list is presented in the illustration below.
„Most of the examined applications have in-app purchases that provide access to additional lessons or fully unlock all functionality of the app. However, the apps do not offer or impose in-app purchases for accelerated or simplified lesson completion (for example, hints) and do not provide purchases aimed at obtaining game resources or improving characters,” Roskachestvo notes.
