Roman Gilg, a prominent developer of Kwin and Xwayland, has introduced a fork of the Kwin window manager called KwinFT (Fast Track), as well as a completely redesigned version of the Kwayland library named Wrapland, which is free from Qt dependencies. The goal of the fork is to enable more active development of Kwin, to enhance the functionality required for Wayland, and to optimize rendering. The classic Kwin suffers from a sluggish patch acceptance process, as the KDE team prefers not to risk disrupting a large number of users by introducing innovations that may break workflows. Many patches have been under review for several years, significantly slowing down the implementation of Wayland and various internal code refactorings. KwinFT is positioned as a transparent replacement for Kwin and is already available in Manjaro. However, developers caution about potential compatibility breaks in the future. In its current form, KwinFT provides the following capabilities, missing in the vanilla Kwin:
- A complete overhaul of the compositing process, allowing for reduced latency in both Wayland and X11;
- Support for the Wayland extension wp_vieporter, which enhances the performance of video players, and is also necessary for the future version of Xwayland, in which hozzáadva lett support for screen resolution emulation in many older games is included;
- Full support for rotation and mirroring of displays under Wayland.
KwinFT and Wrapland are expected to be included in all Linux distributions soon.
