A Switch, a data center operator at The Citadel Campus, along with Capital Dynamics, plans to invest $1.3 billion in the creation of a system of solar power plants and battery storage. The system will be large-scale, with a total capacity of solar power plants amounting to 555 MW and an overall capacity of the Tesla Megapack ‘mega battery’ reaching 800 MWh.
The solar panels will be supplied by First Solar. According to the partners, there will be several systems of 'solar power plants + batteries'. They will be distributed across the state of Nevada, where the level of solar insolation is quite high. One of them will be located near the Reno business park, which houses the world’s largest data center from Switch and the Tesla Gigafactory.

The total capacity of the equipment that can be installed at the Citadel campus is about 650 MW. So far, this limit has not been reached, but the company plans to utilize alternative energy sources. This is to ensure that even under maximum load, there will be no power supply issues for the campus equipment. The area of the campus territory is 690,000 m2.
According to the plan, Switch will first supply energy and battery storage to the Tahoe Reno 1 data center. It consumes about 130 MW. A solar power plant with a capacity of 127 MW and a Tesla battery complex with a capacity of 240 MWh will be constructed next to it. According to the project creators, this complex is exclusively for the operation of the Switch data center, and the energy will not be used for any other purposes. The cost of energy will be about 5 cents per kWh.
Regarding the Megapack batteries, Tesla previously announced an increase in energy density of these batteries by 60% compared to the standard Powerpack.
The largest battery in the world was installed by Tesla Inc. . It has provided a 90% reduction in the operational costs of the local energy grid. The Megapack battery complexes are specifically designed for rapid installation. For instance, the same Australian battery was set up in just 100 days. If it had taken longer, Musk would have waived the fees for services and equipment.
