A Fedora disztribúció átnevezés alatt áll Fedora Linux néven

Matthew Miller, a Fedora project leader, has proposed the initiative to separate the naming of the Fedora community and distribution. The name Fedora is suggested to be used for the entire project and its related community, while the distribution is planned to be called Fedora Linux.

The reason for the renaming is mentioned as the Fedora project not being limited to just one distribution and also developing the EPEL repository for RHEL/CentOS, documentation, websites, and various tools. Therefore, when mentioning Fedora, it is intended to refer to the entire project, not just one of its products.

The name change is proposed to take place in the Fedora 35 release, replacing the parameter 'NAME=Fedora' in the /etc/os-release file with 'NAME="Fedora Linux"'. The parameter 'ID=fedora' will remain unchanged, meaning there will be no need to modify scripts and conditional blocks in spec files. Specialized editions will also continue to be delivered under their old names, such as Fedora Workstation, Fedora CoreOS, and Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop.

The idea of specifying Fedora GNU+Linux instead of Fedora Linux did not receive support, as the extra words complicate perception and, although components of the GNU project are an important part of Fedora Linux, the distribution is not limited to them and also includes many other packages. Furthermore, the use of the word 'Linux' for distributions has already become established and is a widely accepted term.
