A Microsoft tech notice warns that there may be issues when installing the large May update — Windows 10 May 2019 Update.
The reason: the update is blocked on devices with external hard drives or flash drives (via USB port) connected, as well as with an SD card inserted in the card reader, if any is present on the PC or laptop.
If an update is initiated on a computer with external drives connected, an error message will be displayed, the update process will stop, and the update can only be installed after all external drives are disconnected.

What is the problem with the update?
The support article from Microsoft states:
“During the update to the 'May 2019 Update', an incorrect disk reassignment may occur on the respective devices to which an external USB device or SD card is connected.”
Thus, if a user has a USB drive assigned the drive letter 'D', after updating to the 'May 2019 Update', the letter could change, for example, to 'E'.
The reason for this reassignment is the malfunctioning of the disk reassignment mechanism during the update.
This is a very dangerous situation that can cause certain damage to some corporate systems, which may start to function incorrectly after the update, and Microsoft has simply fixed the situation — they blocked the installation of the May update on PCs and laptops with connected external drives.
Microsoft promises to release a fix for this problem in one of the upcoming updates, but no longer by the end of May 2019.
Interestingly, the distribution of the 'Windows 10 May 2019 Update' has not yet started, but the article from support.microsoft warning about the problem has already appeared. They are now taking preventive measures at Microsoft.
It turns out that this blockage of the 'May 2019 Update' will not affect all Windows 10 users, but only those who have the following updates installed:
— April 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1803),
— October 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1809).
There is a high probability that users with earlier versions of Windows 10 will be able to install the 'May 2019 Update' without issues.
