Turris Omnia NG Wired 10 gigabites router, using OpenWRT

A CZ.NIC organization, which is the registrar of the Czech first-level domain CZ and a developer of the free DNS server Knot, introduced the Turris Omnia NG Wired router, built on the same platform as the wireless Turris Omnia NG released last year, and is a more affordable variant of it. The new device is designed for use in server rooms, has a rack-mount form factor, and is equipped with 2 Ethernet ports 10G SFP+ and 4 ports 2.5G RJ45. The device is available for sale at a price of 420 euros.

Like the previous model, the new router utilizes silent passive cooling and features three M.2 slots, which can be used to connect a Wi-Fi module, NVMe storage, and a 4G/5G modem. It also has a color screen with a resolution of 240 × 240, which can be used for displaying statistics, notifications, and monitoring. The hardware consists of a 4-core Qualcomm IPQ 9574 CPU (ARMv8 Cortex A-73, 2.2 GHz), 2 GB of RAM, 8 GB eMMC, 2 ports at 10 Gbps (SFP+), 4 × 2.5 Gbps (RJ45), 3 M.2 slots (PCI Express 3.0 2x), and 2 USB 3.0 ports. Optionally, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 modules can be connected to turn the device into a wireless access point.

The firmware employs a custom branch of the OpenWRT platform, provided under the name Turris OS. In addition to being used for creating a router and wireless access point, the device can also be utilized as a digital hub for homes and small/medium enterprises, suitable for deploying network storage (NAS, Network-Attached Storage), VPN, backup, creating print servers, and running various network services.

There is a built-in capability to run Linux containers using LXC tools, within which any Linux distributions can be installed and virtualized szerverek, appearing to users as a separate computer connected to the local network. Based on the Sentinel platform, the firmware incorporates a dynamic firewall with intrusion detection and traffic flow monitoring elements. The firmware updates automatically without the need for any action from the user. Management is done via a web interface or command line.
