Jon Seager, a Canonical Vice President of Engineering and the technical leader of the Ubuntu project, announced the resumption of work on the Ubuntu Core Desktop project, which develops an alternative desktop version of Ubuntu using solutions from the Ubuntu Core platform and employing packages in Snap format instead of deb packages.
Unlike existing atomic-update distributions, whose system components are mounted in read-only mode, Ubuntu Core Desktop employs a model where "all components are in Snap format." In this model, the system environment, Linux kernel, bootloader, desktop environments, multimedia servers, background processes, and applications are all delivered in Snap format and managed by the snapd tooling.
Unlike the previously developed prototype, the distribution intends to be more modular, dividing the core system into a set of separately updatable Snap packages instead of delivering a single Snap package with the Ubuntu Core system environment. All applications are intended to run in isolation from the main system, and for packages that do not support isolation, a layer will be provided to run using virtualization.
To control applications' access to system and external resources, a permission request mechanism is being developed, requiring user confirmation for access, for instance, when Snap packages request access to files in the home directory, webcam, or microphone. The dynamic output of requests is based on the analysis of system call access, and access control is organized using AppArmor.
Development is being carried out with an eye on three basic use scenarios:
- A workstation where the primary activity is related to web browsing and working with web applications. This scenario is considered the quickest to implement, as ready-made Snap packages for Firefox and Chromium already exist, and there is established support for requesting permissions when accessing the camera and microphone.
