A Linux kernel patch version nine has been proposed with components for developing device drivers in Rust language. The new version is a stripped-down variant of the eighth release published a few days ago. The set is characterized by a significant reduction in size, retaining only the essential minimum sufficient for compiling a kernel module written in Rust.
It is expected that the minimal patch will simplify the adoption of Rust support into the main kernel. After establishing minimal support, the plan is to gradually expand the existing functionality by porting other changes from the Rust-for-Linux branch.
Compared to the eighth version, the patch size has been reduced from 40,000 to 13,000 lines of code. For instance, the ninth version includes only 3% of the code (500 lines) from the 'kernel' crate package and 60% of the alloc library, enabling the creation of basic kernel modules that utilize the Vec type and output information to the kernel log using the 'pr_info!' macro.
