A Discord platform officially clarified the updated age verification policy: mass passport checks and facial scanning will not be implemented. The new age verification system will affect only a small portion of the audience, while for the majority, everything will remain the same thanks to smart algorithms.
The Discord administration emphasizes that to lift restrictions, it will often be enough to use an automated age prediction system based on the existing information about the account owner. However, as reported by the publication The Verge, access to servers and channels with age restrictions or the ability to change certain security settings still requires users to be of legal age.
According to the developers’ clarification, the platform uses an internal analysis model that assesses a person's age based on their account data, device information, activity details, and general behavioral patterns in communities. Only in cases where this model cannot accurately or specifically determine the age will users need to confirm their age using a real-time selfie or by providing governmental documents.
For community members who do not pass verification or are determined by the algorithms to be under 18 years old, a special usage mode based on certain restrictions will be provided. Such users will not be able to access servers intended for adult audiences and will receive a functionality environment adapted for teenagers. As noted by The Verge, similar age assessment mechanisms using artificial intelligence are already being implemented by other major players in the tech market, including Instagram, YouTube, OpenAI, and Anthropic.
