A Trust-DNS DNS server has been renamed to Hickory and will be integrated into the Let's Encrypt infrastructure.

The author of the Trust-DNS DNS server announced the project's renaming to Hickory DNS. The reasons for the name change include the desire to make the project more appealing to users, developers, and sponsors, to avoid overlap in searches with the concept of 'Trusted DNS', and to register a trademark and protect the brand associated with the project (the name Trust-DNS will be problematic to use as a trademark since it consists of generic words that cannot be considered unique).

Initially, the project developed as an experiment to create system components in a programming language that provides means for safe memory handling, but current plans are linked to transforming it into a complete product. The development of the Hickory DNS server will be undertaken under the auspices of the ISRG (Internet Security Research Group), the founding organization of the Let’s Encrypt project, which promotes technologies to enhance internet security (for example, under the aegis of ISRG, implementations of sudo, the TLS module for the Apache web server, NTP servers, and an AV1 decoder, all written in Rust, are being developed).

After the renaming, the project will be moved from the author's personal GitHub repository to a repository under the separate organization Hickory DNS, which will simplify community developers' and maintainers' involvement. The crate packages trust-dns-resolver and trust-dns-proto will be renamed to hickory-resolver and hickory-proto, and the main szerver will be delivered in the hickory-dns package. Currently, the trust-dns-resolver and trust-dns-proto packages have 19 and 20 million downloads on Crates.io, and with investments from ISRG, it is expected that the application of the DNS server will expand and become more user-friendly for workplace implementations.

A Hickory DNS tartalmazza az autoritív DNS-szerver, DNS-ügyfél, helyi resolver és rekurzív DNS-szerver működéséhez szükséges komponenseket. Emellett alacsony szintű protokollok végrehajtásához szükséges könyvtárakat is tartalmaz. A projekt támogatja a DNSSEC-et, DoT (DNS over TLS), DoH (DNS over HTTPS), DoQ (DNS over QUIC), mDNS (Multicast DNS), DNS-SD (Szolgáltatás felfedezés), ANAME, dinamikus rekordfrissítést, CSYNC-et (Child-to-Parent Synchronization), DANE-t (DNS-alapú névhitelesítés), DNSKEY-t, CAA-t (Tanúsítvány Hatóság Engedélyezés).

A jövőben a Hickory DNS-t a Let’s Encrypt infrastruktúrájában kívánják alkalmazni. IP-címek a bejövő kapcsolatokhoz.
