Rizal Muttaqin, a designer of the LibreOffice suite, published on his blog a plan for the possible development of the user interface for LibreOffice 8.0. The most notable innovation is the built-in tab support, which allows quick switching between different documents, similar to how switching occurs between websites in modern browsers.
If necessary, each tab can be detached into a separate window or converted back into a tab from the window. It's also possible to collapse all tabs into a drop-down list available by clicking the ‘^’ button. The header also features a ‘LibreOffice’ button designed to launch the initial interface, which previously appeared during the startup or closure of all documents, allowing users to open a file, visually assess recently opened documents, or create a new document based on a template.
Instead of the classic menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc.), a panel with primary commands such as print is proposed, along with tabs for switching toolbars. All functions of the old menu bar are moved to a drop-down menu, displayed by clicking a separate Menu button. The panel also offers a new search form that encompasses not only the document's content but also searches commands, comments, and help systems. In the upper right corner, there is a button for quickly switching between styles (classic, traditional, and standard).
