Nate Graham, a developer involved in quality control for the KDE project, has published another report on the preparation for the release of KDE 6, scheduled for February 28. In addition to fixing bugs, the user interface of KDE 6 has been polished over the past week. For example, in the volume control sliders on the panel and in the configurator, incremental scrolling has been implemented with a user-configurable volume increase step instead of a constant change of 1% for each step.
The ability to drag applications and windows from the task manager area to another part of the panel has been disabled to prevent accidentally creating launch widgets. When using a session based on Wayland, support for enabling screen mirroring of two displays has been implemented in the configurator with a visible toggle, without the need to drag one screen over the other. A preview of cursor images has been established in the configurator.
Work has been done to optimize performance. The speed of searching configuration files used in default KDE applications has increased by 35-40%. The performance and responsiveness of the configurator (System Settings) have been improved. The startup time of the Discover application manager has been reduced. Compatibility between GPU and KWin handlers for creating screencasts, providing screen sharing, and generating window thumbnails has been enhanced.
In addition, development continues for the KDE Plasma 6.1 and KDE Gears 6.1 branches, which are being developed in a separate repository in parallel:
- In the KCalc calculator, the expression related to the result of the calculation entered by the user is displayed next to the result.
- The Spectacle screenshot creation interface has added a function for scanning QR codes and opening the links encoded within them.
- Support for displaying snowfall warnings has been added to the weather forecast widget.
- In the configurator, on the graphics tablet settings page, it is now possible to change the parameters of tablet and stylus buttons to use them as modifiers instead of for launching actions.
