A GNOME Alapítvány 1 millió eurót kapott a fejlesztésre

A GNOME Foundation nonprofit organization received a grant of 1 million euros from Sovereign Tech Fund. These funds are planned to be spent on the following:

  • creating a new assistive technology stack for the disabled;
  • encrypting user home directories;
  • updating GNOME Keyring;
  • improving hardware support;
  • investments in QA and Developer Experience;
  • expanding various freedesktop APIs;
  • consolidation and improvements of GNOME platform components.

The Foundation invites interested developers—both individuals and organizations—to participate in work on these areas.

Detailed information is still limited, but plans for a new stack of assistive technologies for the visually impaired can be read in the blog of Matt Campbell, who is expected to take on this part of the work. Matt himself is visually impaired and has been developing software for others like him for over 20 years, including for Linux users. Matt is the creator of System Access (from 2004 to the present), a participant in the development of Narrator and UI Automation API at Microsoft (2017-2020), as well as the lead developer of AccessKit (from 2021 to the present).

Sovereign Tech Fund was established in October 2022 and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. During this time, the fund has supported projects such as curl, Fortran, OpenMLS, OpenSSH, Pendulum, RubyGems & Bundler, OpenBLAS, WireGuard.
