Hogyan zajlott a FOSDEM 2021 a Matrixon

Element Matrix Services (EMS).

A hétvégén a következő infrastruktúra működött:

  • horizontálisan skálázható Matrix-szerver Synapse több kiegészítő worker-folyamattal (összesen 11 különböző típusú worker-folyamat);
  • a Jitsi Meet VoIP platformhoz tartozó klaszter, amelyet a prezentációs szobák, kérdések és válaszok, valamint minden más csoportos videóchat közvetítésére használnak (kb. 100 videokonferencia működött egy időben);
  • A Jibri cluster — FOSDEM development for relaying video from Jitsi Meet rooms to multiple destinations (Jibri is a headless Chromium process running on AWS using X11 framebuffer and ALSA audio system, whose output is recorded using ffmpeg);
  • Matrix bot for automating the creation of Matrix rooms according to the FOSDEM schedule, where presentations and other activities will take place;
  • Special widgets for the Element client, such as the FOSDEM schedule in the right sidebar and a list of important messages next to the video stream, filtered by the number of emoji reactions from users;
  • Bridges in each of the 666 rooms with presentations, allowing IRC and XMPP users to send messages and read their history (viewing the video stream was also available via a direct link without using Matrix and Element).

Users could register on the FOSDEM server using either a username and password or the Social Login mechanism, allowing them to log in using Google, Facebook, GitHub accounts, and others. This innovation first appeared at FOSDEM and will soon be available to all other Matrix users in upcoming updates of Synapse and Element. Statistics show that half of the users registered using Social Login.

FOSDEM 2021 on Matrix is arguably the largest free online conference to date. It faced some issues (due to incorrect Matrix server configuration at first, causing tremendous loads), but overall visitors were satisfied and gave positive feedback about the event. And although no one saw each other in person, one of the main bonding elements of the FOSDEM community — namely, friendly gatherings over a pint of beer — still received attention.

Matrix developers hope that this example will encourage people to consider using an entirely free tech stack for their communications and VoIP — even on such a large scale as an entire conference like FOSDEM.

This same information with many details and a clear demonstration of access in a video presentation by the lead person and co-founder of Matrix — Matthew Hodgson és in the podcast "Open Tech Will Save Us" with him.
