December 28 saw the release of 1.9.0 of the cross-platform library libgit2, implementing the core Git methods. The library is written in C and is distributed under the GNU GPL 2 license, with a special linking exception that allows for proprietary use without disclosing the source code.
This is expected to be the final release in the 1.x line, with the next version being libgit2 v2.0, where SHA256 support will transition from 'experimental' to 'supported'. This means there will be changes to the API and ABI in version 2.0 to support SHA256, as well as other breaking changes.
