A «waste» heat from the new Microsoft data center being built in Denmark will be used to heat up to 6,000 homes. Datacenter Dynamics reports that the data center is being constructed in the municipality of Høje Taastrup, located 25 km from Copenhagen — it is one of three facilities being built for the Azure zone announced back in 2020. It is expected to start operation this fall. Two more data centers are under construction in Roskilde and Køge. The warm water from the data center's cooling systems will be utilized by VEKS, which builds district heating systems in the Copenhagen area together with Høje Taastrup Fjernvarme (HTF). VEKS and Microsoft expect that the first «batches» of heat from the data center will reach residents during the heating season of 2025–2026. Additionally, Microsoft has promised to create a recreational park.
