A GNOME 49 release candidate has been presented — the last test release before the planned launch on September 17. The published test release is notable for reverting a previously made change that disabled the compilation of components for X11 support in the GDM (GNOME Display Manager) by default.
Initially, the plan for GNOME 49 was to disable X11 support in GDM by default, while maintaining the ability to launch X11-based desktop environments and keeping the related code for the optional return of X11 support in distributions. The return of X11 support in GDM is explained by the difficulty of separating the capability to launch modern X11 sessions from the use of X11 in GDM itself, for example, support for XDMCP, deprecated x11 sessions, and non-user x11 sessions.
The build option 'x11-support' implemented to disable X11 turned off all X11 support, including the ability to launch X11-based desktop environments, as session handling code in /usr/share/xsessions was also disabled. An attempt was made to isolate the X11 session handling code from the 'x11-support' build option, but it was unsuccessful due to overlaps with other X11 code, appearing as a messy hack.
Ultimately, it has been decided to retain full X11 support in GDM by default for GNOME 49, but in GNOME 50, the code for X11 support will not be disabled by default, but rather removed, leaving only the part necessary for launching X11 sessions. Thus, the 'x11-support' option in GNOME 50 will disable the building of code for launching X11 sessions in GDM and can be applied in distributions that use only Wayland.
