Robert McQueen, a director of the GNOME Foundation, has published a plan for developing Flathub, a catalog and repository of self-contained packages in Flatpak format. Flathub is positioned as a vendor-independent platform for building applications and directly distributing them to end users. Currently, it is noted that Flathub features about 2000 applications, with over 1500 contributors involved in its maintenance. Daily, there are approximately 700,000 downloads of applications and around 900 million requests to the site.
The key tasks for further development of the project include evolving Flathub from a build service into an application catalog-store, creating an ecosystem for distributing Linux applications that takes into account the interests of various participants and projects. Significant attention will be paid to enhancing participants' motivation and financing projects published in the catalog, for which systems for collecting donations, selling applications, and organizing paid subscriptions (recurring donations) are planned. According to Robert McQueen, the biggest barrier to the promotion and development of the Linux desktop is the economic factor, and the introduction of a donation and application sales system will stimulate ecosystem development.
Also mentioned among the plans is the creation of a separate independent organization to support and provide legal assistance for Flathub. Currently, the project is overseen by the GNOME Foundation, but continuing under its wing is recognized as leading to additional risks arising in application delivery services. Furthermore, the funding services being created for Flathub do not align with the non-profit status of the GNOME Foundation. The new organization intends to adopt a management model with transparent decision-making. The governing board will include representatives from GNOME, KDE, and members from the community.
