A Fedora developer working at Red Hat has introduced the SyncStar toolkit, which enables the deployment of services for creating bootable USB media of user-selected operating systems. The main purpose of SyncStar is to create kiosks and information stands that can be used at technical conferences and exhibitions for recording bootable images of various operating systems onto USB drives for participants of the events. The project code is written in Python and is distributed under the AGPLv3 license.

Linux distribution developers can use such kiosks to distribute demo builds of their systems, simplifying attendees' familiarity with Linux at conferences and exhibitions. Speakers and lecturers can utilize the project to share prepped boot images with their audience, showcasing systems mentioned in their talks or containing training materials.

To create a kiosk, you simply need a standard laptop set up at the exhibition stand or a Raspberry Pi board with a 3D-printed case. The project is designed to operate without a monitor; management and selection of the image for recording are done through a web interface that any event participant can access via a smartphone or laptop by connecting to the common wireless network. Notable features of SyncStar include the ability to simultaneously record multiple images in asynchronous mode, an adaptive web interface suitable for various types of devices, and a command-line interface for kiosk configuration.
