Bemutatásra került a DAXFS fájlrendszer, amely a ramfs és tmpfs fájlrendszerekhez hasonlóan a lapozási gyorsítótárat kikerülve működik.

Cong Wang, a developer of the Traffic Control subsystem in the Linux kernel and the Multikernel project, has introduced a new file system called DAXFS in the list of Linux kernel developers. DAXFS uses RAM for data storage, operates in read-only mode, and resembles the functionality of the stripped-down file systems ramfs and tmpfs. The kernel module implementing DAXFS, as well as the mkdaxfs utility for creating the file system, are published under the GPLv2 license. The possibility of integrating DAXFS into the main kernel is under review after a review process.

A key feature of the new file system is the use of the DAX (Direct Access) subsystem to bypass the page cache and access shared physical memory directly. In ramfs and tmpfs, the contents are stored in the page cache, which, when using the same file system in multiple containers or kernels launched with Multikernel technology, leads to several copies of data in physical memory. Furthermore, filling ramfs and tmpfs requires unnecessary copy operations without the possibility of mapping existing memory areas.

Direct memory access in DAXFS eliminates unnecessary copy operations and organizes work around the traditional block device I/O stack and buffering mechanisms, and also avoids memory allocation fragmentation when sharing the same file system across different containers and multikernel kernels. DAXFS operates in Zero-Copy mode and directly serves file contents from memory without unnecessary data duplication in the page cache, with the ability to map contiguous areas of physical memory into each container or kernel instance. Additionally, it supports the use of the dma-buf API for utilizing memory exported by GPU, FPGA/SmartNIC, or CXL devices.

The file system operates in read-only mode and is initialized by loading a pre-prepared file system image into memory, which simplifies implementation, eliminates memory allocation operations during runtime, and avoids complicated device management mechanisms.
