Enrico Weigelt, a project leader of XLibre, prepared a pull request after discussions with the community to integrate the main drivers for X11 into the master branch of the X server. The reason cited is the desynchronization of the X server and drivers due to the changing ABI with which the drivers interact, as well as the desire to provide all necessary drivers together with the X server without the need for manual searches for compatible versions.
Part of the community criticizes this decision, fearing it will complicate the development of new drivers for XLibre, but Enrico insists on the necessity of such an approach. Arguments include a similar development model used by the Linux kernel, which effectively lacks a stable ABI, as well as the 'raw' state of the XLibre codebase, which is still undergoing full-scale refactoring. However, with the project's maturity in the future, developers do not rule out the stabilization of the ABI. New driver development for X11 outside of the XLibre tree is possible, although ABI synchronization remains the developer's responsibility. For those who do not want to install all drivers together with szerverrel they promise to implement build flags.
Additionally, the emergence of an XLibre port for FreeBSD and discussions about translating XLibre to Rust can be noted. The developers expressed opposition to rewriting parts of XLibre in Rust, arguing that the process is lengthy, performance drops, there are no significant advantages, and it is extremely complex to support a bilingual codebase.
