Firmware to support NVIDIA graphics cards included in the 6.7 branch of the Linux kernel. This solution will allow nouveau developers not to worry about reclocking for new graphics cards (starting with the 20xx (NV160 family (Turing) series of graphics cards to the latest 40xx ((Ada Lovelace))). By default, this feature will only be enabled for 40xx series graphics cards. If you want to try it for other generations of NVIDIA devices, you need to specify the parameter nouveau.config=NvGspRm=1 in the kernel boot parameters.
Quote from the Nouveau developers:
Since the NVIDIA GSP firmware takes care of the initialization and power management of the graphics processor, this should simplify the startup of future generations of NVIDIA graphics processors. It is crucial that this should help improve power management / reclocking support for Nouveau drivers, which has not had good support since the GeForce GTX 700… However, do not expect Nouveau to suddenly become more performant compared to the proprietary driver.
There is a downside: this firmware contains even more closed-source blocks from NVIDIA that are necessary for our open driver. Even worse, the ABI of the firmware is unstable; for example, the current NVIDIA driver code, presented for Linux 6.7, is compatible with the firmware distributed as part of the NVIDIA R535 driver package.
The second news from Nouveau: now the NVK driver is compatible with Vulkan 1.0 specification. To operate, it requires a recent kernel (not lower than 6.6) and mesa-git. It will work on graphics cards from the Turing generation to Ada Lovelace. If you have a graphics card from previous generations, you can try to run Vulkan in test mode. There are no guarantees that it will work; there may be artifacts and so on.

This means that it passes all Vulkan 1.0 tests, but does not mean that it is ready for gamers/Linux enthusiasts or that it is a fast implementation. Not to mention that VKD3D-Proton requires support for at least Vulkan 1.3. Back in August, I published some initial tests of NVK. Since then, it has improved, but is still not suitable for Linux gamers with modern games. Just recently, the new NAK compiler has become another important step toward improving performance.
