A FreeBSD fejlesztői a Rust nyelv használatáról tárgyalnak az alap rendszerben

Alan Somers, a developer of a new FUSE driver implementation for FreeBSD and author of Rust bindings for some FreeBSD libraries, has initiated a discussion on the process of integrating Rust code into the core system. During the discussion among project committers, the cost and benefits of the implementation were identified. The cost of adding Rust support will double the build time, while the benefit will simplify the development of certain utilities.

A list of utilities that are intended to be rewritten in Rust, if support for Rust were to be included in the core system:

  • ctl-exporter (exporting ctlstat statistics to Prometheus).
  • fusefs tests.
  • devd.
  • zfsd.
  • nscd.
  • Components of the 802.11ac and Lightning stacks that operate in user space.
  • freebsd-kpi-r14-0.

A list of Rust ports that could be moved to the core system, if Rust support were to be included in the core system:

  • gstat-rs.
  • geom-exporter.
  • nfs-exporter.
  • virtiofsd-rs.
  • jail-exporter.
  • Various systems for managing jail environments.
  • pjdfstest.
  • pf-rs.
  • benchpmc.

Related FreeBSD Rust applications that are proposed to remain in the ports:

  • fsx-rs.
  • ztop.
  • iocage-provision.
  • rsblk.
  • xfuse.
