A Red Hat CEO announced in an internal corporate newsletter about the upcoming layoffs of hundreds of employees. Currently, there are 2,200 staff members employed at Red Hat's headquarters, and another 19,000 work in branches around the world. The exact number of positions being cut has not been specified; it is known only that the layoffs will occur in several phases and will not affect employees involved in product development and direct sales to customers.
The staff reduction is driven by negative forecasts regarding future profits. For example, in the last quarter, Red Hat's revenue grew by 8%, which is seen as a slowdown in growth since the company had shown an average growth rate of 15% since 2019.
Additionally, it is noteworthy that at the beginning of the year, IBM, which owns Red Hat, announced the layoff of 3,900 employees, but later reports indicated that the number of layoffs had increased to 5,000. Considering that just months before this, IBM had hired 7,000 new workers, some analysts attribute the layoffs to a reduction of excess staff that was hired due to a labor shortage during the period of increased economic activity following the pandemic.
