According to Salvatore, in recent years, his work has revolved around reviewing external proposals to improve and modify the code, but this is not what he wanted to do, as he prefers writing code and creating something new rather than solving routine maintenance tasks.
Salvatore will remain on the advisory board of Redis Labs, but will limit himself to idea generation. Development and maintenance will now be handed over to the community. The project leadership has been passed to Yossi Gottlieb and Oran Agra, who assisted Salvatore in recent years, understand his vision for the project, care about preserving the spirit of the Redis community, and have good knowledge of the code and internal workings of Redis. Nevertheless, Salvatore's departure is a significant shock for the community, as he
completely controlled all development matters and played, for the most part, the role of the “through whom all commits and merge requests passed, who decided how bugs would be fixed, what innovations should be added, and what architectural changes were acceptable.
The issue of determining the future development model and interaction with the community has been proposed to be worked on by the new maintainers, who have already a new governance structure that will involve the community. The new project structure implies an expansion of teamwork, which will allow scaling the development and maintenance processes. The project is planned to be made open and friendly for community members, making it easier for them to take a more active and significant role in development.
