A Debian testing package repository, which will form the basis for the Debian 12 'Bookworm' release, has accepted the fnt package, featuring a font manager that addresses the installation of additional fonts and the maintenance of existing fonts. In addition to Linux, the program can also be used on FreeBSD (a port was recently added) and macOS. The code is written in Shell and distributed under the MIT license.
The fnt utility is positioned as an alternative to apt for fonts and supports a similar set of commands for installation, updating, and searching. Additionally, there is a command for visually previewing fonts in the console using ASCII graphics. For a better view of the available fonts, a web service has been prepared. The utility allows for the installation of more recent fonts present in the Debian Sid repository, as well as external fonts from the Google Web Fonts collection. In total, around 2000 fonts are available for installation (480 from Debian sid and 1420 from Google Web Fonts).
