Joshua Strobl, a key developer of the Budgie project, published a proposal to begin forming official Spin builds of Fedora Linux with the Budgie desktop environment. A Budgie SIG group has been established to support Budgie packages and create a new build. The Spin edition of Fedora with Budgie is planned to be released starting with Fedora Linux 38. Budgie is based on GNOME technologies and its own implementation of the GNOME Shell (in the next branch, Budgie 11 plans to separate desktop functionality from the layer responsible for visualization and information output, allowing abstraction from specific graphical toolkits and libraries, and fully supporting the Wayland protocol).
The Budgie Window Manager (BWM) is utilized for window management in Budgie, which is an extended modification of the basic Mutter plugin. Budgie primarily consists of a panel that is organized similarly to classic desktop panels. All panel elements are applets, allowing for flexible configuration of composition, altering placements, and replacing implementations of core panel elements according to preference.
