Schleswig-Holstein, a region in northern Germany, plans to move all government employees' computers, including teachers in schools, to open-source software as part of an initiative to eliminate dependence on a single provider. In the first phase, by the end of 2026, they plan to replace MS Office with LibreOffice, and later switch from Windows to Linux. The migration will affect about 25,000 computers in various government institutions and will be conducted considering the issues that arose during the transition to Linux in the municipal offices of Munich.
The decision for migration has already been reviewed by the parliament of Schleswig-Holstein and confirmed in an interview with the regional minister of digital technologies. It is noted that the transition to open-source software is already underway — currently, a switch has been made to the open platform for video conferencing, Jitsi, and for two years, testing has been conducted on LibreOffice and browser solutions based on the open package Phoenix (OnlyOffice, nextCloud, Matrix). Testing is also ongoing for solutions based on five different Linux distributions, which will help identify the most suitable distribution for migration.
