A GNOME 50 release is being formed based on a codebase that includes a set of changes implementing settings to manage the restoration of applications launched in the previous session. A switch has been added to the configurator that allows disabling the mode that saves the list of running applications at session logout and restores their windows in the next session.

In May, the old session-saving code was removed from the gnome-session manager, which was incompatible with systemd-based session management components. The old implementation saved the list of active applications before the session ended in the directory ~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session and was managed through the gconf parameter 'auto-save-session,' but it did not work on systems with systemd.
At the end of September, a new session-saving system was proposed for GNOME, based on the use of systemd. In addition, a GsmSessionSave object has been added to ensure the preservation of individual application states. Besides saving window positions after restoring an application, GNOME may also incorporate logic for state recovery; for example, GNOME Calculator can recover the selected calculation mode (basic, advanced, programmer), but does not restore the operation history.
