A Linux 5.19 kernel release repository has accepted another set of changes related to the DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) subsystem and graphic drivers. The accepted patch set is notable as it includes 495,000 lines of code, comparable to the total amount of changes in each kernel branch (for example, kernel 5.17 added 506,000 lines of code).
About 400,000 of the added lines come from automatically generated header files containing data for ASIC registers in the AMD GPU driver. Another 22,500 lines provide the initial implementation of support for AMD SoC21. The total size of the AMD GPU driver has exceeded 4 million lines of code (for comparison, the whole Linux kernel 1.0 included 176,000 lines of code, 2.0 — 778,000, 2.4 — 3.4 million, 5.13 — 29.2 million). In addition to SoC21, the AMD driver has included support for SMU 13.x (System Management Unit), updated support for USB-C and GPUVM, and prepared for the support of the next generations of RDNA3 (RX 7000) and CDNA (AMD Instinct) platforms.
In the Intel driver, the most significant number of changes (5,600) is found in the code for power management. Additionally, the Intel driver has added identifiers for the Intel DG2 GPU (Arc Alchemist), used in laptops, provided initial support for the Intel Raptor Lake-P (RPL-P) platform, added information about Arctic Sound-M graphics cards, implemented ABI for compute engines, and added Tile4 format support for DG2 cards, while DisplayPort HDR support has been realized for Haswell-based systems.
In the Nouveau driver, the changes affected about a hundred lines of code in total (the transition to using the drm_gem_plane_helper_prepare_fb handler has been made, and static memory allocation has been applied to some structures and variables). Regarding the use of open-source kernel module texts from NVIDIA in Nouveau, work is currently focused on identifying and fixing bugs, with plans to use the published firmware to enhance driver performance in the future.
