Thorsten Behrens, a leader of the LibreOffice graphic subsystem development team, has published a demo version of the LibreOffice suite compiled into WebAssembly intermediate code and capable of running in a web browser (about 300 MB of data is loaded onto the user's system). The Emscripten compiler is used for the conversion to WebAssembly, and the output is organized using the VCL backend (Visual Class Library) based on a modified Qt5 framework. WebAssembly-specific fixes are primarily developed in the main LibreOffice repository.
Unlike the LibreOffice Online edition, the WebAssembly-based build allows the entire office suite to run in the browser, meaning all code executes on the client side, while LibreOffice Online executes and processes all user actions on szerveren, with only the interface being transmitted to the client's browser. Moving the main part of LibreOffice to the browser side will enable the creation of a cloud edition for collaborative work, relieving the load from szerverek, minimizing differences from the desktop LibreOffice, simplifying scaling, enabling offline operation, and allowing P2P interactions between users and end-to-end data encryption on the user's side. Plans also include creating a widget based on LibreOffice for integrating a full text editor into pages.
