Satya Nadella, the head of Microsoft, stated that work is currently underway to adapt the userspace component of the popular operating system Windows to a new proprietary hybrid kernel based on the FreeBSD kernel source code. Thus, Windows 12 is the last OS from Microsoft to use the outdated NT kernel; subsequent releases will utilize a new kernel codenamed 'Tomato'.
One of the main reasons for this decision is the growing issues with supporting the outdated NT kernel, as well as the increasing popularity of NIX-like kernels in the mobile devices and IoT segments.
It is expected that, in addition to the traditional BSD system calls, the new kernel will also feature an alternative interface based on COM/WinRPC for interaction with user code. Therefore, instead of simple system calls, developers will receive a framework for serializing/deserializing data sent via WinRPC, based on the Microsoft IDL Compiler and previous work on COM technology.
