The developers of XCP-ng, who are working on a free and open-source alternative to the proprietary XenServer cloud infrastructure management platform (Citrix Hypervisor), have announced their integration into the Xen project, which is developed under the Linux Foundation. Joining the Xen Project allows XCP-ng to be considered a standard distribution for deploying virtual machine infrastructure based on the Xen hypervisor and XAPI.
The merger with the Xen Project will enable XCP-ng to serve as a link between users and developers as a consumer distribution, while also ensuring that XCP-ng users will continue to adhere to the originally established principles in the future (avoiding transformation into a restricted commercial product as happened with XenServer). The merger will not notably affect the development processes used in XCP-ng.
At the same time, a beta release of XCP-ng 8.1 has been proposed for testing, which recreates the functionality of Citrix Hypervisor 8.1 (formerly known as XenServer). XenServer updates to XCP-ng are supported, full compatibility with Xen Orchestra is ensured, and migration virtuális gépekhez from XenServer to XCP-ng and back is possible. An installation image of 530 MB has been prepared for download.
The installation images of the new release are built on a CentOS 7.5 package base using the Linux 4.19 kernel and Xen 4.13 hypervisor. The most notable change in XCP-ng 8.1 has been the stabilization of guest system boot support in UEFI mode (Secure Boot support has not been transferred since it is tied to proprietary code). Additionally, the performance of virtual machine import and export
in XVA format has improved, storage performance has been increased, new input/output drivers for Windows have been added, support for AMD EPYC 7xx2(P) chips has been introduced, chrony is now used instead of ntpd, support for guest systems in PV mode has been deprecated, and by default, Ext4 FS is now applied in new local storage, with the experimental module for ZFS being updated to version 0.8.2.
Remember that Citrix Hypervisor (XenServer) and XCP-NG allow for rapid deployment of virtualization systems. szerverek és munkaállomások, központosított irányítási eszközöket kínálva korlátlan számú szerver és virtuális gép számára.
