A Waterloo University and U.S. Naval Research Laboratory researchers presented the results of developing a Tor network simulator comparable in node and user count to the main Tor network, allowing experiments that closely resemble real conditions. The toolkit and simulation methodology prepared during the experiment enabled the simulation of a network of 6,489 Tor nodes on a computer with 4 TB of RAM, connected simultaneously by 792,000 virtual users. <\/p>\n

It is noted that this is the first full-scale simulation of the Tor network, with the number of nodes corresponding to the actual network (the operational Tor network has about 6,000 nodes and 2 million connected users). A complete simulation of the Tor network is of interest for identifying bottlenecks, modeling behavior in the event of attacks, testing new optimization methods in real conditions, and verifying concepts related to security. <\/p>\n

With a fully functional simulator, Tor developers will be able to move away from the practice of conducting experiments in the main network or on individual working nodes, which create additional risks of compromising user privacy and do not eliminate the possibility of failures. For example, in the coming months, the implementation of support for a new congestion control protocol in Tor is expected, and simulation will allow for a comprehensive study of its operation before deployment in the real network. <\/p>\n

In addition to eliminating the impact of experiments on the privacy and reliability of the main Tor network, the presence of separate test networks will provide the ability to quickly test and debug new code during development, immediately implement changes for all nodes and users without waiting for the completion of lengthy intermediate deployments, and more promptly create and test prototypes implementing new ideas. <\/p>\n
