Martijn Braam, a key developer of the postmarketOS distribution, announced his departure from the Pine64 community, which focuses on creating open devices, due to the project's shift towards a single specific distribution instead of supporting an ecosystem of various distributions working together on the software stack. <\/p>\n
Initially, Pine64 employed a strategy of delegating the development of the software stack for its devices to the Linux distribution developer community and formed Community editions of the PinePhone smartphone, shipped with different distributions. Last year, the decision was made to use the Manjaro distribution by default and to cease the formation of separate PinePhone Community Edition releases in favor of developing the PinePhone as a cohesive platform that offers a standard reference environment by default. <\/p>\n
In Martin's opinion, this change in the development strategy disrupted the balance within the community of software stack developers for the PinePhone. Previously, all participants acted as equals and collaborated to develop a common software platform to the best of their abilities. For example, the Ubuntu Touch developers did significant work to initially deploy on the new hardware, the Mobian project prepared the stack for telephony, and postmarketOS focused on the stack to support the camera. <\/p>\n
Manjaro Linux has largely become self-contained, focusing on maintaining existing packages and utilizing already created resources for its own build, without making a significant contribution to the development of the common software stack that could be beneficial for other distributions. Manjaro was also criticized for including developing changes in its builds that had not yet been recognized as ready for delivery to users by the main projects. <\/p>\n
