A Linux 6.0 kernel, set to be released next Monday, includes a change that addresses performance issues with systems using AMD Zen processors. The performance drop was caused by code added 20 years ago to work around a hardware issue in certain chipsets. This hardware problem has long been resolved and is not present in modern chipsets, but the old workaround was forgotten and became a source of performance degradation on systems with modern AMD CPUs. The old bypass maneuver does not affect new systems with Intel CPUs, as these use a separate intel_idle driver for ACPI access instead of the common processor_idle driver. <\/p>\n

The bypass maneuver was added to the kernel in March 2002 to block the manifestation of an error in chipsets related to the lack of proper idle state handling due to delayed processing of the STPCLK# signal. To work around the ACPI implementation issue, an additional WAIT instruction was added, slowing down the processor to give the chipset time to enter the idle state. Profiling using Instruction-Based Sampling (IBS) on AMD Zen3 processors revealed that the processor spends significant time executing a stub, leading to incorrect interpretations of CPU load status and triggering deeper sleep states (C-State) by the cpuidle handler. <\/p>\n

This behavior manifests as reduced performance in workloads frequently alternating between idle and busy states. For instance, when using a patch that disables the bypass maneuver, the average tbench score increases from 32191 MB\/s to 33805 MB\/s.
