The Sourcegraph project, which develops a code navigation, refactoring, and search engine, has abandoned development under the Apache 2.0 license in favor of a proprietary license that prohibits replication and sale, but allows copying and modification during development and testing starting from version 5.1.

Initially, the release notes for Sourcegraph 5.1 stated that the open edition of Sourcegraph was removed and transitioned to the Sourcegraph Enterprise license. Later, the text was changed to say that individual parts of the Sourcegraph product were removed, and components related to search functionality were re-licensed. Meanwhile, components like IDE extensions and the AI assistant Cody, which continued development under an open license as part of the main repository with proprietary code, were left in the repository under the Apache 2.0 license.

The Sourcegraph company also promised to publish a note in its blog explaining the reasons for the license change, and until then, referred to a response from its employee in the bug tracking system. It is claimed that Sourcegraph's licensing model remains focused on selling the product to companies and providing open tools for individual developers. The open community edition of Sourcegraph did not gain sufficient distribution among developers, and in 99.9% of cases, users applied various versions of Sourcegraph Enterprise.

The parallel support of two similar products, one of which is unrequested, has been recognized as impractical and wasting developers' resources. After re-licensing, the code remained publicly available (but under a proprietary license), as did the development process. Sourcegraph developers will also continue to participate in the development of the open search engine Zoekt and will keep returning changes to this project. As before, individual developers have access to free options of Sourcegraph Enterprise: with open projects, the cloud service sourcegraph.com can be used for free, and to work with closed code, Sourcegraph Enterprise can be installed on their own servers. szerveren, using the free tariff plan.
